Colour therapy or colourology, is a method of alternative therapeutic healing. Also called chromotherapy it is claimed that a trained therapist of chromotherapy can use colour to balance a persons energy fields wherever a persons body is lacking, be it emotional, spiritual, physical, or mental.

Chromotherapists point to a scientific basis for their ideas and practice, proposing that colours have been shown to bring about emotional influence and reactions in people. A common standard method of emotional diagnosis is the use of a ‘Luscher’ colour test, developed by Max Lüscher a Swiss psychotherapist who first developed his colour test in the1960’s.

Therapists performing chromo therapy will apply colour and light to specific areas and known acupoints on the patient’s body. Because colours are associated with both positive and negative effects in colour therapy, specific colours and accurate amounts of colour are deemed to be critical in healing, which is why therapists will spend time testing and assessing the patient before treatment begins. There are many tools used for applying colour treatment, such as crystals with specific colours, candle that include organic colours and scents with the use of aromatherapy to heighten the emotional aspect of the treatment, coloured fabrics are also an important part of the treatment with tactile touch of the colour important, as well as hydrotherapy in bath / soak treatments.

Colour therapy has been used in Ayurvedic treatment possibly going back many thousands of years, it is also a part of many eastern treatments, with traditional Chinese medicine attributing colours to internal organs with treatment utilising colours associated with the organs requiring treatment. Recent scientific evidence suggests that colours also influence the subconscious when making choices and decisions, there is no denying that colour has an influential effect on the human psyche, from making us feel good, to reflecting our emotional moods in the choice of our surroundings. So it is no surprise to learn that colour is a useful and worth while treatment for invoking the body’s ability for self healing. Finding a skilled therapist that can decipher one’s imbalance and being capable of finding the right colours for treatment is always going to be the most important decision the patient can make.
